Total Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 cup balsamic vinegar
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 3 large tomatoes, sliced into ½-inch rounds
  • 1 (16-ounce) package fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into ¼-inch rounds
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ cup fresh basil leaves
  • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine balsamic vinegar and honey. Bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer until it thickens and reduces to about ⅓ cup, approximately 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow it to cool.
  3. On a serving platter, arrange the tomato and mozzarella slices in an alternating pattern for a decorative presentation.
  4. Season the arranged slices with salt and black pepper.
  5. Tuck fresh basil leaves between the tomato and mozzarella slices.
  6. Drizzle the salad with extra-virgin olive oil followed by the cooled balsamic reduction.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Chefs Notes

  • Use the freshest tomatoes you can find for the best flavor—heirloom varieties work beautifully.
  • Allow the balsamic reduction to cool fully; it will thicken more as it rests.
  • For an added touch, sprinkle with flaky sea salt just before serving.
  • This dish is best served fresh but can be assembled shortly before serving and kept chilled.
