Country Apple Dumplings

These Country Apple Dumplings are the kind of cozy, comforting dessert that feels like it came straight out of a farmhouse kitchen.

Tender apple wedges are wrapped in buttery crescent roll dough, then baked until golden and bubbling in a rich cinnamon-sugar sauce.

As they bake, the dough becomes flaky and crisp on top while soaking up all that sweet, caramel-like goodness underneath.

The magic ingredient—citrus soda—helps create a luscious syrup that transforms this simple recipe into something truly irresistible.

Each bite is warm, sweet, and perfectly spiced, making these dumplings ideal for family dinners, holidays, or anytime you want an easy dessert that tastes like you spent hours in the kitchen.

Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 16
Yield: 16 dumplings

Ingredients

  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
  • 2 (10-ounce) cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle citrus soda (such as Mountain Dew)

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cut each apple into 8 equal wedges and set aside.
  3. Unroll the crescent dough and separate it into triangles.
  4. Wrap each apple wedge in a crescent triangle, starting at the wide end and rolling toward the tip. Pinch the edges to seal.
  5. Place the wrapped apple dumplings evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  6. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Stir in the sugar and cinnamon until well combined.
  7. Pour the butter mixture evenly over the dumplings.
  8. Slowly pour the citrus soda around the dumplings (avoid pouring directly on top if you want crispier tops).
  9. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving. Spoon extra sauce over each dumpling when serving.

Chefs Notes

  • Granny Smith apples work best for their tartness, but Honeycrisp or Fuji can be used for a sweeter version.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped topping for a classic dessert experience.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of vanilla extract to the butter mixture.
  • Avoid pouring soda directly on top of the dumplings if you prefer a crispier pastry finish.
