Fluffy French Toast

This fluffy French toast recipe takes a classic breakfast favorite and makes it even better with a simple trick—adding a little flour to the batter.

The flour helps create a slightly thicker custard that clings to each slice of bread, resulting in French toast that cooks up beautifully golden on the outside while staying soft, rich, and tender inside.

Perfect for weekend breakfasts, brunch gatherings, or a cozy morning at home, this recipe transforms ordinary pantry ingredients into something truly special.

The warm notes of cinnamon and vanilla give every bite a comforting flavor, and the texture is irresistibly light and fluffy. Serve it hot with butter, syrup, or fresh fruit for a breakfast everyone will look forward to.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 12 slices bread (3/4 to 1 inch thick)

Directions

  1. Place the flour in a large mixing bowl. Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture becomes smooth with no lumps.
  2. Add the eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until the batter is completely blended.
  3. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium heat.
  4. Dip each slice of bread into the batter, allowing it to soak briefly until well coated but not falling apart.
  5. Place the soaked bread onto the hot griddle and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side.
  6. Repeat with the remaining slices, cooking in batches if needed.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy.

Recipe Note

This recipe can easily be turned into a casserole-style French toast for a simple make-ahead breakfast.

Arrange the bread slices in a greased baking dish, pour the batter evenly over the top, and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, bake at 350°F for 40 to 50 minutes.

For a sweet finish, sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top and broil for 2 to 3 minutes before serving.
