Ingredients
- 8 (5-ounce) boneless chicken thighs
- Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (or as needed)
- 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
- 7 cloves garlic, chopped (or more to taste)
- 1 cup honey
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- Pinch of onion powder
- Pinch of garlic powder
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
Directions
- Season the chicken thighs on both sides with salt and pepper.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat.
- Add the chicken and sear on one side until golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes.
- Flip the chicken, then add the chopped onion and garlic. Cook for another 5 to 7 minutes, until the chicken is mostly cooked through and the onion and garlic are softened.
- Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
- In the same skillet, add honey, soy sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir well, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan to build flavor.
- Return the chicken to the skillet and coat it in the sauce.
- Cover and reduce heat to medium. Simmer for about 10 minutes, turning the chicken halfway through, until fully cooked and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
- Transfer the chicken to a serving plate and spoon the sauce over the top.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve warm.
Chefs Notes
- Both skin-on and skinless chicken thighs work well in this recipe.
- For an even stronger garlic flavor, use a full head of garlic instead of individual cloves.
- Serve over steamed white or brown rice to soak up the extra sauce.
- Fresh parsley can be used in place of cilantro if preferred.
