Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Servings: 6 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 3/4 cup ketchup (or to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns, split

Directions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it begins to brown and release some fat, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  2. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Continue cooking until the vegetables are softened and the beef is fully cooked through, about 3 to 5 minutes more.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and garlic powder. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and flavorful.
  5. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly onto the hamburger buns and serve warm.

Chefs Notes

  • If using higher-fat ground beef, drain excess grease before adding the sauce ingredients.
  • Adjust the sweetness and tang by adding more brown sugar or mustard to taste.
  • For extra depth of flavor, let the mixture simmer longer to thicken further.
  • Serve with toasted buns for added texture and to help hold the filling.
