Mom’s Peach Crisp

This cozy peach crisp is the kind of simple, old-fashioned dessert that feels like it came straight from a family kitchen.

Sweet sliced peaches are layered into a baking dish, then covered with a buttery brown sugar oat topping that bakes up golden, crisp, and warmly spiced with cinnamon.

It is an easy dessert to make with fresh peaches when they are in season, but canned peaches work beautifully when you want a quick, comforting treat any time of year.

Serve it warm on its own, or make it extra irresistible with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of whipped cream.

Total Time: 45 mins

Servings: 8

Yield: 1 8-inch square peach crisp

Ingredients

  • 4 cups sliced fresh peaches
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup rolled oats

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Spread the sliced peaches evenly in the bottom of an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, cold butter, cinnamon, and salt. Use a pastry cutter or fork to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  4. Stir the rolled oats into the crumb mixture until evenly combined.
  5. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the peaches, gently pressing it down so it forms a rustic, even layer.
  6. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the topping is crisp and golden brown and the peaches are warm and bubbling around the edges.
  7. Let the peach crisp cool slightly before serving.

Chefs Notes

  • If using canned peaches, use 2 15-ounce cans and drain them well before adding them to the baking dish.
  • For extra flavor, add a small pinch of nutmeg to the topping.
  • This peach crisp is especially good served warm with vanilla ice cream.
  • If your peaches are very juicy, you can toss them with 1 tablespoon of flour before adding the topping.
