Sloppy Jenn Sandwiches

My wife’s take on Sloppy Joe sandwiches.

There’s something nostalgic and comforting about a messy, saucy sandwich piled high with seasoned ground beef and served on a soft bun.

These Sloppy Jenn sandwiches deliver that classic, crave-worthy flavor with just the right balance of sweetness and tang.

Every bite is hearty, satisfying, and perfect for busy weeknights or casual gatherings.

This updated take on a timeless favorite keeps things simple while letting the rich, savory filling shine.

The combination of tender beef, sautéed vegetables, and a bold tomato-based sauce creates a deliciously sloppy texture that’s impossible to resist.

Serve them fresh and hot for a meal that’s guaranteed to bring everyone back for seconds.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 6
Yield: 6 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 3/4 cup ketchup, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns, split

Directions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until it begins to brown and release some fat, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  2. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Continue cooking until the vegetables are softened and the beef is fully cooked through, about 3 to 5 minutes more. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and flavorful.
  5. Spoon the meat mixture evenly onto the bottom halves of the hamburger buns, then top with the remaining halves and serve warm.

Chefs Notes

  • Adjust the sweetness or tanginess by increasing or decreasing the brown sugar and mustard to suit your taste.
  • For extra richness, try using a blend of ground beef and ground pork.
  • Lightly toasting the buns adds texture and helps hold the saucy filling better.
  • This mixture can be made ahead and reheated, making it perfect for meal prep or leftovers.
